Carbon Sequestration Potential of Coastal Sandy Tracts Under Rice Ecosystem

Introduction

In general in agro-ecosystems, soil receives considerable carbon inputs from a variety of sources including leaf fall, stubbles, roots and root exudates as well as through external sources including farm yard manure and compost. The semi-dry system of rice cultivation is mainly confined to tracts that depend on rains and have no supplementary irrigation facilities.  In this semi-dry system part of the rice crop’s life cycle passes under aerobic conditions and part under anaerobic conditions. In the conventional rice cultivation practiced in irrigated areas, rice crops’ life cycle passes completely under anaerobic condition.  The amount and quality of organic carbon are crucial factors influencing soil productivity.  The endemic deficiency of organic matter in tropical sandy soils particularly those under the influence of arid and semi arid climates are a major factor contributing to their low productivity. To improve the soil organic carbon   content, organic system of nutrient management is essential to meet the nutrient requirement of the crops as well as to improve the soil organic carbon status. Soil organic matter in soils with tropical upland conditions is more difficult than in soils used for lowland rice conditions.(Sahrawat,2005).Kaboneka et al (1997) found that wheat straw,corn stover or soybean stubble were mineralized during 30 days incubation. Mineralization of green manure is slow in semidry condition hence compost or animal manures can be used as an organic source for semidry rice. Experiments were conducted to explore the possibility of recycling a common weed in the study area, Ipomea cornea as an organic source for semi dry rice.

Materials and Methods

The study area, located in east coastal area of southern peninsular India at longitude (E) 78010’- 79027’ and latitude (N) 9005’- 9056’. The green leaves of Ipomea cornea harvested from wastelands near the experimental site were chopped and mixed with cattle / poultry manures and wetted with deionized water to bring the mix to 60 per cent moisture content.  Under laboratory conditions, 5 kg of the green leaves of Ipomea cornea was composted with cattle manure and poultry manure @ 0.625, 1.25, 1.88 and 2.50 kg anaerobically for 30 days.  The matured compost was obtained at the end of composting period (30 days).  The nutrient contents of the organic materials composted are furnished in Table 1. The moisture content was maintained at 60 per cent.  Since the composting was done under anaerobic condition, the mix was not turned.  The ‘mix’ was subsequently maintained at this anaerobic condition.  A total of nine treatments were replicated for five times.  The CO2 –C evolution was measured at weekly intervals. (Bundy and Bremner, 1972). Separate containers were kept for each of the 5 sampling intervals so that once opened for CO2 –C measurement, the container could be discarded.    

 Field experiments were conducted in coastal sandy tracts with rice-rice cropping sequence under semi-dry condition.  The experimental soil (Typic Tropaquept) was alkaline in soil reaction (soil: water ratio 1:2) (pH 8.7), low in
N (Subbiah and Asija, 1956) (90 kg ha-), P (Olsen et al., 1954) (4.2 kg ha-1) and high in available K (Stanford and English, 1949)(324 kg ha-1 ) .The initial soil organic carbon content was 1.2 g kg-1.  The Ipomea cornea compost obtained from another batch of composting was applied basally (10 kg / plot) as per the treatment schedule.  The experimental plot size was 5 x 4 m2.  The design of the experiment was a randomized block design with three replicates.  The oxidizable soil organic carbon content was measured (Walkely and Black, 1934) in various growth stages of rice, tillering, panicle initiation, flowering and harvest stages.  At harvest stage, rice grain and straw yields and soil temperature were recorded.

Result and Discussion

CO2 -C   evolution

     Faster mineralization followed by a steady decline in the rate of mineralization with time.  Initially, the mineralization was faster; with increase in the period of composting, there was a steady decline in the mineralization rate.  The exponential nature of carbon mineralization from soil organic matter and added plant residues was previously reported by Vanlauwe et al., (1994).  At all sampling intervals, the lowest amount of C was mineralized from poultry manure and the highest from cattle manure.  The pattern of C mineralization from Ipomea cornea compost was similar to that of the control soil from fourth week after incubation onwards; indicating that most of the C added through compost had been mineralized within four weeks of incubation (Figure1). High rates of CO2-C evolution from the Ipomea cornea –cattle manure compost immediately after incubation was noticed. This could be due to the presence of easily decomposable organic compounds in the cattle manure as compared to less easily decomposable organic compounds in the poultry manure.  Poultry manure contains large amounts of CaCO3, struvite and other basic compounds (Bril and Solomons, 1990).  Low level of decomposition in Ipomea cornea-poultry manure compost could be attributed to high concentration of Ca and neutralization of organic acids and H+ by Ca and buffering reactions (Mahimairaja et al., 1995).

Field Experiment

 Oxidizable soil organic carbon content

  At all stages of crop growth, significant improvements in oxidizable soil organic carbon content were observed in the Ipomea cornea-poultry manure compost treatments as compared to in the control and Ipomea cornea-cattle manure compost treatments. Highest oxidizable soil organic carbon content (4.30 g C kg-1) was recorded for the Ipomea cornea-poultry manure (50% RD) compost treatment (Table 3).  Many studies have revealed a direct linear relationship between soil organic carbon storage and gross annual C input to soil (Halvin et al., 1990; Paustian et al., (1992).   With increase in the level of Poultry manure (50% RD) used in the compost, Oxidizable soil organic carbon content was increased. 

 Yield of rice

 Application of Ipomea cornea-poultry manure compost (37.5%RD) recorded higher grain (3550 kg ha-1) and straw yields (4260 kg ha-1) which was on par with the application of Ipomea cornea-poultry manure compost (50% RD) (Table 4).  This could be due to the higher amount of CaCO3 in the poultry manure.  Calcium in poultry manure exchange with Na in the soil exchange complex, thereby reduce the ill effects of Na on soil and plant.  The experimental site was alkaline in soil reaction. Despite a higher nutrient content in the poultry manure as compared to cattle manure the presence of CaCO3 in poultry manure could have favourable effect on the experimental soil. Low yield in Ipomea cornea-cattle manure compost applied plots could be due to the lesser amounts of nutrients added through cattle manure.  

Soil Temperature

 At harvest stage a negative linear correlation between soil temperature and soil organic matter status was observed (Figure 2).  As soil organic matter status increased, decrease in soil temperature was noticed.

 Conclusions

 Ipomea cornea   is one of the most rapidly spreading weeds in southern peninsular India. It is fast encroaching on cultivated lands, water reservoirs and waste lands. Significant amount of time, effort and money has been used for its eradication. Recycling of this weed Ipomea cornea could serve dual purpose of its eradication and serving as a better organic material. Ipomea cornea   could be composted with animal manures and used as manure for semidry rice cultivation. Between cattle manure and poultry manure, Ipomea cornea   composted with poultry manure recorded lower CO2 evolution,wider C:N ratio and higher rice yield and organic carbon status

Data Storage Media – A Guide to Selecting Media For Storing and Backing Up Computer Data

Data, or information stored on your computer, can either be held on fixed disk drives inside the computer or on removable media such as CD’s that can be inserted and removed. Removable media can be used to transfer files between computers or to backup the data already existing on fixed disk drives. There are three types of removable media: Magnetic, Optical and Flash.

Magnetic Storage

Magnetic Storage: Hard disks, floppy disks and digital audiotape are examples of Magnetic storage. They operate through a read/write head, which creates and reads magnetic impressions on the disk.

The downside…

• The magnetic impression only lasts for around five years
• The capacity of most removable magnetic disks is too low for many types of files

Optical storage

Optical Storage holds information in digital form that is written and read by a laser. All CD and DVD devices are examples of this.

The upside…

• Increased capacity: one Optical disc can store the same amount of data as over 500 diskettes
• Durability: they last up to seven times as long as Magnetic forms of storage

Flash Memory (Solid-State Removable Storage)

Solid-state memory (or Flash memory) is a high-performance plug-and-play storage device that contains no moving parts. It is found in digital cameras, video game consoles and digital audio players. You can use it in the form of USB Flash Drives to transfer or backup data. Flash memory is small, light and fast.

Backup

Backup is the copying of files onto portable media so that if your computer crashes, data won’t be lost in oblivion. Backup is usually routine in large businesses but is often neglected by individual users. Some suggest backing up data files and duplicating your hard drive weekly. It takes around 45 minutes to backup a 500-megabyte hard disk.

There are two options- Local or Internet backup. The following is a list of Local backup options. Most of these also double as devices used to transfer data between computers.
• Diskettes
• Zip Drives
• CD’s
• DVD’s
• Flash Drive

Internet Backup

Another backup option is sending your files to an Internet site for safekeeping. If your computer crashes you can simply download them from the site. Here are a few examples of such sites:

Diskettes and Zip Drives

Diskette

A Diskette is a 3.5-inch removable magnetic disk. The older version, the floppy disk, is 5.25 inches square and flexible. Copying to a diskette is quick and economical.

Ideal for…

• Those who use their PC for personal finance – the diskette enables you to retrieve checkbook balances etc.
• Projects that need to be continuously backed up such as a film script, as it is a cheap alternative.

Not so good for…

• Some newer computer and laptop models that do not have a diskette or floppy drive installed.
• Large amounts of data as diskettes don’t have a great storage capacity

Zip Drives

A Zip drive is a small, square shaped magnetic disk that is ideal for backing up your PC. The 100-megabyte size holds the equivalent of 70 floppy diskettes. They also come in a 250-megabyte size

Ideal for…

• Duplicating your entire disc drive
• Archiving
• Storing graphic images or other large files
• Transferring large files
• Keeping certain data separate from files on your hard disk

The downside…

• They seem to be a fleeting technology – most computers do not have a Zip Disc drive installed and opinion varies on how long they will be around for.

Compact Disks

There are different standards of CD’s that have different capabilities. Just to confuse us they are recognized by seemingly similar acronyms; CD-R, CD-RW, CD+RW, DDCD and E-CD.

CD-R

CD-R (Compact Disc – Recordable) is a CD that can be recorded to only once. It usually holds 74 minutes of audio or 650 MB of data, although newer versions hold up to 80 minutes of audio (700 MB of data). If your PC has CD burning software and a compatible CD-R or CD-RW drive, the CD-R can be used in the same way as a diskette. However unlike a diskette it cannot be deleted or overwritten. Look out for CD-Rs that have an additional protective layer which make them less susceptible to damage caused through scratching.
Ideal for…

• Making music CD’s
• Storing photos
• Storing permanent data

Not so good for…

• Transferring files as they can only be used once

CD-RW/CD+RW

A CD-RW (Compact Disc Rewritable) and CD+RW can be recorded onto as many times as desired. Data can be overwritten and erased. Other than this, the CD-RW is identical to the CD-R. If it wasn’t for their finite durability CD-RW’s and CD+RW’s could be reused endlessly.

Ideal for…

• Transferring files
• Holding temporary data

Not so good for…

• Holding important permanent files-in case they are accidentally deleted

Double Density CD (DDCD)
This disc has a much greater storage capacity than an average CD-R or CD-RW.

Ideal for…
• Backing up
• Storing archival data

Enhanced CD
Enhanced CD (E-CD) is an audio CD with CD-ROM data added. CD-ROM data is added in the space not taken by audio. Recording artists can use this to include videos, lyrics, interviews or promo material. The E-CD can be played on a CD player but to view additional material you need access to a multimedia-capable device, such as a CD-i player, DVD-ROM, or CD-ROM drive.

Bridge Disks
A CD-Bridge disc holds extra information on a CD-ROM XA track. The disc can be played on either a CD-i player attached to a television, or a CD-ROM XA drive attached to a computer. Software such as Photo or a Karaoke CD player can provide lots of fun with the Bridge Disk.

DVD (Digital Versatile Disk): More than movies

Although DVD’s have become more associated with video, they can also hold audio and computer data; hence their name Digital Versatile Disk. Like the CD, a DVD is a 120-mm by 1.2mm thick disk. However the DVD has more tracks than a CD so holds far more data. CD’s have an unvarying storage capacity of 750MB, whereas DVD’s store up to 17GB.

A range of acronyms is also used to distinguish between the different types and capabilities of DVD’s available. These include DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW and DVD-Audio.
DVD-ROM

DVD-ROM (Digital Versatile Disc – Read Only Memory) is similar to a movie DVD, but is designed for computers. The DVD-ROM stores data in the same way that the CD-ROM does and is used in the DVD-ROM drive of your PC.

The upside…

• Larger storage space – hold more data than a CD
• Can be filled with nearly everything; video, music or computer specific data
• A base speed of 1.32 megabytes/sec

The downside…

• Many older computers do not have a DVD-Rom drive installed
• Can be recorded on only once

DVD-Audio

DVD-Audio (DVD-A) is designed for audio data and high-quality music. Its storage capacity is seven times that of a CD and provides at least twice the sound quality. Like the Enhanced CD, DVD-A can contain other data, providing the listener with extra information such as lyrics or images. DVD-A is predicted by many to replace the standard audio CD in the music industry.

DVD-R

Like the CD-R, the DVD-R (Digital Versatile Disc-Recordable) can be recorded on once.

The upside…

• A DVD-R can contain an assortment of information; video, text, audio and computer data

• A DVD-R can be played on your normal DVD video player but remember, if you have additional data not of the same format e.g. video and audio together, you will need a DVD-ROM or Multimedia player of some kind

• A DVD-R is read at the same speed as commercially made DVD’s

DVD-RW and DVD+RW
Similar to the CD-RW, a DVD-RW or DVD+RW (Digital Versatile Disc – Rewritable) can be recorded on, rewritten and erased multiple times. Other than this they are identical to the DVD-R.
DVD minus and plus are just different versions with the same functionality.

The Future of CD/DVD Storage

The majority of the technology industry predicts that soon DVD’s, with their larger storage capacity and faster access time, will replace CD’s. DVD-ROM drives are likely to be sold with new computer systems in the way that CD-ROM drives once were. However we are always on the cusp of newer technologies, such as the HD-ROM.

HD-ROM (High Density-Read Only Memory)

HD-ROM uses a more precise particle beam to write data. This enables information to be written on more durable materials such as metal so storage is virtually permanent. HD-ROM has hundreds of times the storage capacity of the CD-ROM.

Flash Drives

A Flash drive is a small portable memory stick that holds anywhere from 1Mb to 1GB of data. It is surprisingly lightweight and is often worn around the neck or carried as a funky key chain. They are compatible with any PC that has USB port and with Mac OS 9 and OS X, Windows 2000 and XP or Linux 2.4.17.

The upside…

• Durable – more so than CD’s or DVD’s
• No need for batteries or a separate power source
• Convenient – your computer should recognize the additional drive as soon as you insert it into the USB port
• Ideal for backup
• Larger storage capacity then many other portable devices
• More portable than ZIP drives, CD’s and Diskettes
• Quick transfer rate (approx. 1Mb/sec)
• Edit, rewrite, delete as many times as desired
• Help desk personnel can use Flash Drives as a portable toolkit that includes system updates and recovery tools.

The downside…

• More expensive than other portable devices
• Viruses – The portability and compatibility of the Flash Drive increases the chance of spreading viruses. In many cases viruses carried by a Flash Drive will not be detected as most antivirus software is reactive and only recognizes known viruses
• Theft – a Flash Drive can make it easier for data to be stolen from an unlocked PC
• Little Security – the size and weight of the Flash drive makes it very easy to misplace. Most have little or no security features and data is accessed easily. Some Flash Drives do have built in security; either a password or in some cases a finger print system – but this comes at a price.

What Is The Difference Between Cd And Dvd Duplication And Replication?

Over the past few years, we as a society have become increasingly enthralled in the field of computers and entertainment. Thanks to the huge advances in computer hardware and software within the past decade, we can now easily and quickly copy files onto a disc format, allowing for the ability to own multiple copies of a specific file or set of data, which also acts as a fantastic back up method for those important files. Whether it is a music file or even a film, the possibilities are endless thanks to these new developments. When it comes to copying a file on to either a CD or DVD format, there are two different ways in which you can do this-either through duplication or replication. However, although these appear to be quite similar methods, it is important to be aware that each method is completed using a different process, and each process will provide you with a different final product. In order to get the best for your needs, it is important to take into consideration what you require your copy for.

Understanding the two differences is very important in order to get the best from your copy. A duplicated CD or DVD is created by information being burnt onto a blank CD/DVD-R, but in terms of a replicated CD or DVD; information can also be added during the CD/DVD manufacturing process. Many of us will have burnt a CD ourselves on our own personal computer using a variety of different softwares-this is very similar to the process which is used in CD duplication. A CD/DVD duplicator with extract data from a master disc and write this onto a blank disc-this can only be completed on a blank disc. Once the data has been written on to the blank CD/DVD, the information will then be compared with the master copy to verify the copy which then completes the whole process. CD/DVD replication however, works in a different way, using a manufacturing process instead. When CD/DVD duplication is complete, the end result is either a CD-R or a DVD-R; however, with CD/DVD replication, media such as a CD/DVD-R does not exist before the manufacturing process begins. The process will commence with the client’s master copy being evaluated for any data corruption, once this is complete, a glass master which contains all of the data from the original master will be created. The glass master is required in order to develop a stamper which is why it must be flawless. The stamper will be loaded into an Injection Moulding machine which will create the CD/DVD replicates-the quality of which will be determined by the overall quality of the glass master. Once complete, the final outcome will result in CD-ROMs or Read Only Memory for CDs, and DVD-5, DVD-9, DVD-10 or DVD-18 for a DVD replication.

As stated previously, the need for your copy will determine whether you are best suited to CD duplication or replication. Duplicated discs are generally completed in quite a small space of time, but will be able to hold less information compared to a replicated CD/DVD. CD/DVD replication can hold considerably more information which is perfect for those looking to make DVD copies, but due to this, the copies may take slightly longer in order to be made. The level of quality you can expect will be determined by the quality of the master copy, but also how the master information was extracted. This is often done in similar ways, but in terms of CD/DVD duplication and replication, this is where their similarities end.

SCSI Recognition help?

I just got a Quantum DLT-4000 Tape drive and an Adaptec SCSI Card. My computer recognizes the card, and the card recognizes the drive and has it listed as port 06. I sign into Windows XP (Its XP Home, x86(32 bit)) and the drive wont show up anywhere. How do I get my computer to recognize the drive?
What would be a good backup software to use with this drive.

The drive is there probably, but Windows does not have any software to use it…
You have to get backup software to be able to use an external tape drive. Older versions of NT server actually had a “Backup” utility that worked with tapes…maybe look for something similar…maybe XP has a backup utility that recognizes tapes, but I don’t know for sure…
