Why Use External Hard Drive Enclosures?
When a hard disk needs to be stored externally, it is usually encased in a hard drive enclosure. This handy case connects the hard drive to the computer through a USB port, making it a plug-and-play device. A hard drive enclosure has many benefits:
Security: Many of us are concerned about viruses, Trojan horses, spyware, hacking, malicious scripts and other online threats. While some of these can compromise business secrecy, others can corrupt the data and make it unusable.
Saving sensitive data on an external hard drive is a step towards keeping it secure. If an authorized user is not accessing the data, he can simply disconnect the enclosure and keep the hard drive and lock it in a safe place.
Portability: External hard drives allow the transfer of large amounts of data easily and quickly. A user can transfer all of his data from one computer to another in a very short span of time.
Backup: The losses incurred when the main hard drive fails can be heavy. An external hard drive protects the user from this risk by backing up important data in a matter of minutes.
Media Storage: Sound, video and graphic files can take up a large amount of memory space. Storing these files externally frees up system resources and offers protection against online threats. It also reduces time taken for system tasks such as virus checking, spyware sweeping and file defragmentation.
Reuse: Older hard drives are rapidly being replaced by those with a larger capacity. Users may encase them and use them as external hard drives.
Portability: It is very easy to transport huge amounts of data between computers using an external hard drive enclosure. The user may then carry the hard drive with him wherever he goes.
Alternate Operating Systems: Some of us like to work with multiple operating systems. An external hard drive allows us to use a fully functional alternative OS without disrupting the main system. This may be especially useful to try out beta programs or even critical ones with compatibility issues.
When investing in a hard drive enclosure, it is important to ensure you purchase the right fit for the right type of drive. For instance, older drives would usually require the IDE hard drive enclosure. Newer ones may demand a SATA hard drive enclosure. Some IDE or SATA enclosures have a built-in power supply and cooling fan. In turn, the fan may also affect the noise levels of the enclosure. When equipped with the correct enclosure, the user can enjoy all the benefits of external hard drives error-free.
