Spa Covers Going Green?

All this talk about going green, a big part of saving the environment is to not create more waste that will just end up clogging our land fills. Follow me on this for a minute… There are 10 million spa owners in the USA, and each one of them uses a typical rigid foam spa cover on their hot tub. For the sake of this demonstration each foam cover is only two inches thick and every spa is eight feet by eight feet. That would mean each spa cover contained about 10.666 cubic feet of foam per spa cover. For the rest of this example we will use 10.5 cubic feet per cover.

If each cover on every spa becomes saturated within two years and needs to be replaced that would mean that we would be adding 52.5 million cubic feet of waste to our landfills in just spa covers every year.

If it takes two and a half covers worth of foam to make up one cubic yard that translates to 4 million cubic yards of waste added to our land fills every two years just in spa covers.

If there are 11 million Cubic yards of stone in the Great Pyramid at Giza, we are adding enough foam to build a duplicate of it to our landfills just from used spa covers every six years conservatively. There are four and a half million cubic yards of concrete in Hoover Dam. We could build a two lane highway of discarded foam filled spa covers from Seattle Washington to Miami Florida every two years.

In case you have not noticed most foam filled spa covers are not two inches thick anymore. If all those old foam covers were four inches thick all these calculations would be double.

But we are just being conservative so we want to stick with two inches thick. If we ripped the covers in half and laid those pieces end to end we could circle the earth at the equator on used spa covers every two years.

Heck with parking lots, in a few years we could pave the entire planet with foam just from saturated foam spa covers from the USA alone.

So what is the solution? Well shop for a better spa cover. There are options available on the internet that your local spa dealer probably does not offer. You do not have to quit using your spa to save us. You just need to get a Spa Cover that does not use foam to insulate. There would be two major advantages to doing so. First the spa cover that did not use rigid foam to insulate would last longer. Since what always fails in the typical spa cover is the foam, either breaking or getting so saturated that you cannot lift it, a spa cover that did not use foam would tend to last longer.

Second, if the new type of spa cover does not use rigid foam it will also be a lot more friendly to the environment when it does come time to discard it. Less trash, less waste, less land fill, not that is what going green is all about.

Higher expenses drive factories inland

Escalating production costs in China’s coastal manufacturing hubs are pushing some suppliers to relocate to the central and western provinces.

The Pearl and Yangtze River Delta regions may soon lose their monopoly over China’s export manufacturing sector. Rising costs and the worsening labor shortage are driving companies in these coastal areas to relocate production facilities to the interior.

Although the shift started mid-2004, the trend gained pace in 2007, when rapid economic growth in the west surpassed that in the east. Companies leaving Guangdong, Zhejiang and other coastal provinces are now setting up new production bases in Hunan, Jiangxi, Anhui, Hubei, Shanxi and Sichuan to take advantage of lower worker and land expenditure, among other benefits.

The cost of labor in Tianmen, Hubei province, for instance, is about 50 percent lower than in coastal regions. Electricity and land costs are 20 to 30 percent less.

Such factors are what convinced Full River (Hong Kong) Ltd to relocate its manufacturing facilities from Shenzhen in Guangdong province to Liling in Hunan. The headquarters, R&D and marketing departments remain in Shenzhen.

The monthly minimum wage in the inland city is 500 yuan ($75), while factory rental is about 8 yuan ($1.17) per square meter. In areas outside Shenzhen’s special economic zone, the rates stand at 900 yuan ($130) and 12 yuan ($1.75) per square meter. Expenditure is set to rise further, as a provincial mandate will lift worker salaries by as much as 21 percent beginning May 1.

Although Full River has seen its transportation expenses go up, overall costs are still about 5 percent lower. Material sourcing is unaffected, as the company’s suppliers are mainly in Zhejiang, Sichuan and Hebei, all of which are geographically closer to Liling than Shenzhen.

Division of labor was one of the major objectives of Guangzhou Canttro Extension Electronics (Group) Co. Ltd, a maker of electronic connectors, when it established factories in Hangzhou in Zhejiang and Wuhan in Hubei.

This forward-looking company anticipates labor recruitment to get increasingly difficult in the future. Setting up production facilities outside of Guangdong would ensure the company’s continuous development, as products will also be promoted in different provinces.

“It would be easier to recruit workers in small numbers,” general manager Zheng Haibin said. “For example, employing 200 in Hangzhou and another 200 in Wuhan is much easier than finding 400 more workers in Guangdong, where we already have 500.”

Managing a small factory is also easier than a large one. “The challenge ahead would be on keeping the loyalty of the workers,” Zheng said. “The new employees would be provided with company shares to motivate them.”

Guangzhou Canttro’s factory in Hangzhou began operations in January 2010. The Wuhan factory is scheduled to open by May this year. The supplier is keeping its Guangzhou office for marketing, sales, R&D and for the manufacture of high-end products.

Local governments in inland provinces also provide incentives, including special land rates for investors that have a registered capital exceeding a certain amount. An initial expenditure of at least 50 million yuan ($7.3 million), for instance, can lower land purchase costs from 90,000 to 140,000 yuan ($13,200 to $20,500) per hectare to just 30,000 yuan ($4,400).

Because of this, most transplanted factories claim to incur general savings of between 5 and 30 percent. This comes even as material and transportation costs are currently higher than in the coastal region.

Labor-intensive plants lead migration

Many of the high-profile transfers involve foreign-invested businesses that carry out manual processes extensively.

Last year, Intel transferred its assembly and test plants from Shanghai to Chengdu in Sichuan. The move started in February and was completed in November 2009.

In October 2009, Taiwan-based Foxconn finalized a $1 billion contract to construct a manufacturing base also in Chengdu.

Hewlett-Packard and Taiwan’s Quanta are establishing notebook computer production bases in Chongqing. HP’s new factory opened in January 2010. Quanta signed a contract in that month as well.

In November 2009, Pfizer signed an agreement with the local government to set up an R&D center at the Wuhan National Bioindustry Base in Hubei. Attractive brainpower costs as well as tax and housing subsidies enticed the pharmaceutical company to establish facilities there. Although minimum wages are lower in Wuhan, the research skills and English proficiency of workers there are said to be on a par with Shanghai, where Pfizer has had an R&D center since 2005.

But locally owned enterprises are also in motion.

Since 2008, a number of garment, fashion and footwear makers in Guangdong have been redeploying their production lines to Hunan and Jiangxi, while keeping their headquarters, design centers, and marketing and sales offices in the coastal province.

In early 2009, nine garment makers moved their factories from Guangdong to Huaxian in Henan. More than 2,000 jobs were affected by the transfer.

Textile companies in Hong Kong and Jiangsu are investing about $150 million in a denim garments processing park in Chongqing. Some 30 companies will be based in the park over the next three years.

Domestic expansion also a motivation

Apart from lower costs, there are other factors driving factory migrations.

Some companies are merely attempting to be closer to their export destinations and save on freight costs. For instance, movers to Guangxi aim to shorten the distance to Vietnam, while investors in Xinjiang would be right at the door of Central Asia.

Further, the large domestic market in the western and interior regions is an enticement. The China government has invested heavily in these areas since 2000, and the rapid development there has been boosting domestic consumption. Retail sales in rural regions increased 0.2 percentage points faster than in urban areas in 2009.

New Zhongyuan Ceramics Co. Ltd supports the China government’s campaign to develop the economy of Western China. The company has plants turning out a wide range of ceramic and sanitary ware in Guangdong, Sichuan, Jiangxi and Hunan.

The supplier is building two more factories in Faku, Liaoning province, and Dangyang in Hubei. Aside from benefiting from the lower labor and land costs at the new sites, the expansion enables New Zhongyuan to create a national network and further its aim of becoming the top ceramic manufacturer in China.

Coastal areas to remain major production bases

Despite the high-profile movements, the coastal provinces are not yet in danger of losing their economic power. Many small and midsize companies that have weighed the advantages and disadvantages of moving inland have decided that the coastal areas’ strengths continue to offset the benefits of the interior. The supply chain inland is not yet as mature as in the Pearl and Yangtze River Delta regions. Some are turned off by the expenses for finding a suitable location, worker training and new sources of raw materials.

Fears of insufficient skilled labor likewise persist. In the gift industry, for instance, demand is seasonal so efficient employees are highly valued. It may take some years before the level of productivity in the interior can reach the same level as that in coastal regions.

Evergreen Garment (China) Co. Ltd, a maker of promotional shirts with 300 workers at its Shenzhen factory, said it is still easier to find skilled labor in the coastal than inland regions. “Most midsize and small factories think it is not necessary to move inland,” general manager Zhang Bilian said. “Labor costs are rising all over the country.”

The company also cited Shenzhen’s well-established supply chain and proximity to Hong Kong that facilitate exports, R&D and participation in trade exhibitions.

The China government, however, is aware of the skill and efficiency disparity. The educational infrastructure in Western China has been undergoing an upgrade over the past few years in order to close the gap.

To ensure further that there would be sufficient skilled workers and engineers in the area, China’s State Council has announced a full refund of tuition fees for college graduates who decide to work in central or western provinces. Various other incentives are given to migrant workers to convince them to head west instead of the south and the east.

Hong Kong-invested Orient Source Mfg (HK) Co. Ltd, a supplier of dolls and action figures, describes the labor cost in Huizhou, where it has a plant, to be more acceptable than in other Guangdong cities. The company appreciates the convenient information exchange and transportation link between Hong Kong and Huizhou as well.

Having been in Huizhou since 1986, Orient Source values its good relationship with the local government and local suppliers, which would be costly to rebuild in other areas.

In Shenzhen, among interviewed companies without immediate plans of relocating are RDI Technology (Shenzhen) Co. Ltd and GOSCAM/Gospell Smarthome Electronics Co. Ltd.

“Shenzhen is the most important production and export hub for many electric products,” RDI assistant general manager Mike Yuan said. “With more than 30 years of development, Shenzhen has a well-established supply chain and industrial environment, and an efficient transportation network.” The baby monitor company has 700 workers at its factory.

Doll maker Shantou City Chenghai Yinyu Industry Co. Ltd is also content with its current location. “The labor cost in Shantou is not as high as in the other cities of the Pearl River Delta region,” sales manager Raymond Xu said. “Shantou is the largest production hub for plastic toys in China. Various companies from different backgrounds have set up base in the city for its great industrial environment and abundant supply chain.”

Factory movements not all interior-bound

Shenzhen LYD Technology Co. Ltd is not yet ready to leave the coastal region, but it plans to transfer its baby monitor factory from Dongguan in Guangdong’s southwest to Huizhou in the provincial center. The move is prompted mainly by the lower cost of labor in the central city. The minimum monthly wage in Huizhou is 670 yuan ($98), compared with 770 yuan ($113) in Dongguan.

Meanwhile, the transfer to Qingdao of Qingdao Cale Optoelectronics S&T Co. Ltd’s factory from Shenzhen is part of a long-term strategy. Chairman Zhang Lianxin said Shenzhen’s LED illumination industry is wedged at low-end manufacturing that the local government has no plans to advance.

Qingdao Cale makes high-end and midrange LED illumination products. Qingdao, known as the white goods center of the Bohai Bay Rim Economic Region, offered several incentives for the company to become one of the city’s leading enterprises for LED illumination products. These included low land rent, an R&D fund grant, an investment subsidy and a purchase order worth more than $500,000.

The city’s white goods industry gives Qingdao Cale access to an ample supply of skilled manual workers. The supplier can also take advantage of the hundreds of manufacturing service providers to which it can subcontract some processes whenever necessary.

Due to the mature supply chain in Foshan, manufacturers such as Foshan Vigorboom Ceramic Co. Ltd prefer to stay in the city or in the surrounding districts instead of migrating inland.

This Guangdong city has long been a production hub for ceramic tiles. But ceramic manufacturing has been a traditionally high-polluting industry, and the Foshan government has been reforming practices and pushing local makers to leave the city center in recent years. Foshan Vigorboom’s factory is in Shunde, a district in the outskirts of the city. Enping Rungo Ceramics Co. Ltd, meanwhile, moved recently from Shunde to Enping in southwest Guangdong.

Local government efforts to develop environment-friendly industries, however, have resulted in diminished resources for ceramics manufacturing. News reports indicate that by 2011, 80 to 90 percent of Foshan’s ceramic enterprises would have moved inland.

Tile and sanitary ware supplier Guangdong Dongpeng Ceramic Co. Ltd, for instance, is relocating from Foshan to Hunan. About 800 million yuan ($117 million) has been invested in the new factory, which will not be fully constructed until 2015. Once operational, the new plant will have an annual production capacity reaching 1.5 billion yuan ($220 million).

Secret of Golf Rankings

In January 1, 2007, the new calculation method of World Golf Ranking Points was officially opened. Taking advantage of this opportunity, let us take a moment to “decrypt” the original and the new golf world rankings. In this article, I would like to talk something about the secret of golf rankings. If you want to know much more information or jokes, you may read this funny article – Who Is the Best Golf Caddy at Pickgf.com.

Origin of the World Rankings

Today, there are as many as several dozen of various tour in the world, each tour will be based on the cumulative year to determine the top prize, such as the Tour two years the players have won four titles Lie. But so many titles, his world ranking would be helpful? The answer is disappointing, because this so-called Official World Golf Ranking and there is no position in the Tour, Chao from not making any world ranking points. You may want to swing your liking Callaway X-22 Irons as a golf pro, so you should get more golf tips.

Jack Nicklaus has won a career in the majors eighteen trophies; he should be regarded as the world number one, is it right? Unfortunately, throughout Nicklaus had not tasted the taste of the world’s number one, he can only be called a PGA Tour number one, because there was no so-called world ranking system.

The first world ranking system was born in 1986, which is a system launched by four majors and five Tour organizers, it used to set up the world rankings system is designed for the contest between the players has a basis of objective data. At that time sponsor is Sony, this ranking system is called the Sony world Ranking, later evolved into today’s name.

In 1994, the Asian Tour was established in Hong Kong, then it joined the five Tour PGA Tour formed an international coalition. Then came the Canadian Tour, Nationwide Tour, and Challenge Tour and so has been included among the world’s top organizations.

Therefore, if professional golfers want to get in the world ranking points, to participate in the nine games at the Tour and four of the competition is the only choice, or even if you are in an area, or an ordinary tournament win more titles, the most they can be addressed as a single region of the world number one only. Thank you for reading my article, you could read some other articles in my blog – Golf with My Life.

A Tour of the Pentium(r) Pro Processor Microarchitecture

Introduction

One of the Pentium(r) Pro processor’s primary goals was to significantly exceed the performance

of the 100MHz Pentium(r) processor while being manufactured on the same semiconductor process. Using the same process as a volume production processor practically assured that the Pentium Pro processor would be manufacturable, but it meant that Intel had to focus on an improved microarchitecture for ALL of the performance gains. This guided tour describes how multiple architectural techniques – some proven in mainframe computers, some proposed in academia and some we innovated ourselves – were carefully interwoven, modified, enhanced, tuned and implemented to produce the Pentium Pro microprocessor. This unique combination of architectural features, which Intel describes as Dynamic Execution, enabled the first Pentium Pro processor silicon to exceed the original performance goal.

Building from an already high platform

The Pentium processor set an impressive performance standard with its pipelined,

superscalar microarchitecture. The Pentium processor’s pipelined implementation uses five

stages to extract high throughput from the silicon – the Pentium Pro processor moves to a

decoupled, 12-stage, superpipelined implementation, trading less work per pipestage for

more stages. The Pentium Pro processor reduced its pipestage time by 33 percent, compared

with a Pentium processor, which means the Pentium Pro processor can have a 33% higher clock

speed than a Pentium processor and still be equally easy to produce from a semiconductor

manufacturing process (i.e., transistor speed) perspective.

The Pentium processor’s superscalar microarchitecture, with its ability to execute two

instructions per clock, would be difficult to exceed without a new approach.

The new approach used by the Pentium Pro processor removes the constraint of linear

instruction sequencing between the traditional “fetch” and “execute” phases, and opens up

a wide instruction window using an instruction pool. This approach allows the “execute”

phase of the Pentium Pro processor to have much more visibility into the program’s

instruction stream so that better scheduling may take place. It requires the instruction

“fetch/decode” phase of the Pentium Pro processor to be much more intelligent in terms of

predicting program flow. Optimized scheduling requires the fundamental “execute” phase to

be replaced by decoupled “dispatch/execute” and “retire” phases. This allows instructions

to be started in any order but always be completed in the original program order. The

Pentium Pro processor is implemented as three independent engines coupled with an

instruction pool as shown in Figure 1 below.

What is the fundamental problem to solve?

Before starting our tour on how the Pentium Pro processor achieves its high performance it

is important to note why this three- independent-engine approach was taken. A fundamental

fact of today’s microprocessor implementations must be appreciated: most CPU cores are not

fully utilized.

The first instruction in this example is a load of r1 that, at run time, causes a cache miss.

A traditional CPU core must wait for its bus interface unit to read this data from main

memory and return it before moving on to instruction 2. This CPU stalls while waiting for

this data and is thus being under-utilized.

While CPU speeds have increased 10-fold over the past 10 years, the speed of main memory

devices has only increased by 60 percent. This increasing memory latency, relative to the

CPU core speed, is a fundamental problem that the Pentium Pro processor set out to solve.

One approach would be to place the burden of this problem onto the chipset but a

high-performance CPU that needs very high speed, specialized, support components is not a

good solution for a volume production system.

A brute-force approach to this problem is, of course, increasing the size of the L2 cache to reduce the miss ratio. While effective, this is another expensive solution, especially considering the speed requirements of today’s L2 cache SRAM components. Instead, the Pentium Pro processor is designed from an overall system implementation perspective which will allow higher performance systems to be designed with cheaper memory subsystem designs.

Pentium Pro processor takes an innovative approach

To avoid this memory latency problem the Pentium Pro processor “looks-ahead” into its instruction pool at subsequent instructions and will do useful work rather than be stalled. In the example in Figure 2, instruction 2 is not executable since it depends upon the result of instruction 1; however both instructions 3 and 4 are executable. The Pentium Pro processor speculatively executes instructions 3 and 4. We cannot commit the results of this speculative execution to permanent machine state (i.e., the programmer-visible registers) since we must maintain the original program order, so the results are instead stored back in the instruction pool awaiting in-order retirement. The core executes instructions depending upon their readiness to execute and not on their original program order (it is a true dataflow engine). This approach has the side effect that instructions are typically executed out-of-order.

The cache miss on instruction 1 will take many internal clocks, so the Pentium Pro processor core continues to look ahead for other instructions that could be speculatively executed and is typically looking 20 to 30 instructions in front of the program counter. Within this 20- to 30- instruction window there will be, on average, five branches that the fetch/decode unit must correctly predict if the dispatch/execute unit is to do useful work. The sparse register set of an Intel Architecture (IA) processor will create many false dependencies on registers so the dispatch/execute unit will rename the IA registers to enable additional forward progress. The retire unit owns the physical IA register set and results are only committed to permanent machine state when it removes completed instructions from the pool in original program order.

Dynamic Execution technology can be summarized as optimally adjusting instruction execution by predicting program flow, analysing the program’s dataflow graph to choose the best order to execute the instructions, then having the ability to speculatively execute instructions in the preferred order. The Pentium Pro processor dynamically adjusts its work, as defined by the incoming instruction stream, to minimize overall execution time.

Overview of the stops on the tour

We have previewed how the Pentium Pro processor takes an innovative approach to overcome a key system constraint. Now let’s take a closer look inside the Pentium Pro processor to understand how it implements Dynamic Execution. Figure 3 below extends the basic block diagram to include the cache and memory interfaces – these will also be stops on our tour. We shall travel down the Pentium Pro processor pipeline to understand the role of each unit:

•The FETCH/DECODE unit: An in-order unit that takes as input the user program instruction stream from the instruction cache, and decodes them into a series of micro-operations (uops) that represent the dataflow of that instruction stream. The program pre-fetch is itself speculative.

•The DISPATCH/EXECUTE unit: An out-of-order unit that accepts the dataflow stream, schedules execution of the uops subject to data dependencies and resource availability and temporarily stores the results of these speculative executions.

•The RETIRE unit: An in-order unit that knows how and when to commit (“retire”) the temporary, speculative results to permanent architectural state.

•The BUS INTERFACE unit: A partially ordered unit responsible for connecting the three internal units to the real world. The bus interface unit communicates directly with the L2 cache supporting up to four concurrent cache accesses. The bus interface unit also controls a transaction bus, with MESI snooping protocol, to system memory.

Tour stop #1: The FETCH/DECODE unit.

Let’s start the tour at the Instruction Cache (ICache), a nearby place for instructions to reside so that they can be looked up quickly when the CPU needs them. The Next_IP unit provides the ICache index, based on inputs from the Branch Target Buffer (BTB), trap/interrupt status, and branch-misprediction indications from the integer execution section. The 512 entry BTB uses an extension of Yeh’s algorithm to provide greater than 90 percent prediction accuracy. For now, let’s assume that nothing exceptional is happening, and that the BTB is correct in its predictions. (The Pentium Pro processor integrates features that allow for the rapid recovery from a mis-prediction, but more of that later.)

The ICache fetches the cache line corresponding to the index from the Next_IP, and the next line, and presents 16 aligned bytes to the decoder. Two lines are read because the IA instruction stream is byte-aligned, and code often branches to the middle or end of a cache line. This part of the pipeline takes three clocks, including the time to rotate the prefetched bytes so that they are justified for the instruction decoders (ID). The beginning and end of the IA instructions are marked.

Three parallel decoders accept this stream of marked bytes, and proceed to find and decode the IA instructions contained therein. The decoder converts the IA instructions into triadic uops (two logical sources, one logical destination per uop). Most IA instructions are converted directly into single uops, some instructions are decoded into one-to-four uops and the complex instructions require microcode (the box labeled MIS in Figure 4, this microcode is just a set of preprogrammed sequences of normal uops). Some instructions, called prefix bytes, modify the following instruction giving the decoder a lot of work to do. The uops are enqueued, and sent to the Register Alias Table (RAT) unit, where the logical IA-based register references are converted into Pentium Pro processor physical register references, and to the Allocator stage, which adds status information to the uops and enters them into the instruction pool. The instruction pool is implemented as an array of Content Addressable Memory called the ReOrder Buffer (ROB).

We have now reached the end of the in-order pipe.

Tour stop #2: The DISPATCH/EXECUTE unit

The dispatch unit selects uops from the instruction pool depending upon their status. If the status indicates that a uop has all of its operands then the dispatch unit checks to see if the execution resource needed by that uop is also available. If both are true, it removes that uop and sends it to the resource where it is executed. The results of the uop are later returned to the pool. There are five ports on the Reservation Station and the multiple resources are accessed as shown in Figure 5 below:

The Pentium Pro processor can schedule at a peak rate of 5 uops per clock, one to each resource port, but a sustained rate of 3 uops per clock is typical. The activity of this scheduling process is the quintessential out-of-order process; uops are dispatched to the execution resources strictly according to dataflow constraints and resource availability, without regard to the original ordering of the program.

Note that the actual algorithm employed by this execution-scheduling process is vitally important to performance. If only one uop per resource becomes data-ready per clock cycle, then there is no choice. But if several are available, which should it choose? It could choose randomly, or first-come-first-served. Ideally it would choose whichever uop would shorten the overall dataflow graph of the program being run. Since there is no way to really know that at run-time, it approximates by using a pseudo FIFO scheduling algorithm favoring back-to-back uops.

Note that many of the uops are branches, because many IA instructions are branches. The Branch Target Buffer will correctly predict most of these branches but it can’t correctly predict them all. Consider a BTB that’s correctly predicting the backward branch at the bottom of a loop: eventually that loop is going to terminate, and when it does, that branch will be mispredicted. Branch uops are tagged (in the in-order pipeline) with their fallthrough address and the destination that was predicted for them. When the branch executes, what the branch actually did is compared against what the prediction hardware said it would do. If those coincide, then the branch eventually retires, and most of the speculatively executed work behind it in the instruction pool is good.

But if they do not coincide (a branch was predicted as taken but fell through, or was predicted as not taken and it actually did take the branch) then the Jump Execution Unit (JEU) changes the status of all of the uops behind the branch to remove them from the instruction pool. In that case the proper branch destination is provided to the BTB which restarts the whole pipeline from the new target address.

Tour stop #3: The RETIRE unit

The retire unit is also checking the status of uops in the instruction pool – it is looking for uops that have executed and can be removed from the pool. Once removed, the uops’ original architectural target is written as per the original IA instruction. The retirement unit must not only notice which uops are complete, it must also re-impose the original program order on them. It must also do this in the face of interrupts, traps, faults, breakpoints and mis- predictions.

There are two clock cycles devoted to the retirement process. The retirement unit must first read the instruction pool to find the potential candidates for retirement and determine which of these candidates are next in the original program order. Then it writes the results of this cycle’s retirements to both the Instruction Pool and the RRF. The retirement unit is capable of retiring 3 uops per clock.

Tour stop #4: BUS INTERFACE unit

There are two types of memory access: loads and stores. Loads only need to specify the memory address to be accessed, the width of the data being retrieved, and the destination register. Loads are encoded into a single uop. Stores need to provide a memory address, a data width, and the data to be written. Stores therefore require two uops, one to generate the address, one to generate the data. These uops are scheduled independently to maximize their concurrency, but must re-combine in the store buffer for the store to complete.

Stores are never performed speculatively, there being no transparent way to undo them. Stores are also never re- ordered among themselves. The Store Buffer dispatches a store only when the store has both its address and its data, and there are no older stores awaiting dispatch.

What impact will a speculative core have on the real world? Early in the Pentium Pro processor project, we studied the importance of memory access reordering. The basic conclusions were as follows:

•Stores must be constrained from passing other stores, for only a small impact on performance.

•Stores can be constrained from passing loads, for an inconsequential performance loss.

•Constraining loads from passing other loads or from passing stores creates a significant impact on performance.

So what we need is a memory subsystem architecture that allows loads to pass stores. And we need to make it possible for loads to pass loads. The Memory Order Buffer (MOB) accomplishes this task by acting like a reservation station and Re-Order Buffer, in that it holds suspended loads and stores, redispatching them when the blocking condition (dependency or resource) disappears.

Seagate To Offer 300 Tb Hard Drive In 2010

The technology moves forward so, 300 TB on a 3.5 inch hard drive may not seem so great in 2010. But here in 2007, is a lot of data, especially when Seagate’s largest hard drive capacity is 750GB miserable in comparison. Correction-The 300 TB is actually terabits, and not terabytes. Therefore, the Seagate drive new store in 2010 approximately 37.5 terabytes, and while it is little more than 10 times smaller than an actual unit of 300 terabytes, which is still huge compared to the units we use today day. And who knows what we will have by 2011, or 2012!

The technology used today to expand hard drive capacity is called perpendicular recording, where bits are recorded on a hard drive vertically, instead of horizontal, allowing many more bits to be recorded in the same physical space.

To shoot the 37.5 terabyte (or 300 terabit) rabbit from a hat, technology comes to the rescue once again. This time, Seagate will use a technology called heat-assisted magnetic recording (MRHA). They do not detail exactly how this works, but one square inch of disk space can store 50 terabits of data.

According to a Joystiq report line, this is enough to store all the library ‘of Congress, “without using any compression. It will also be sufficient to store 6,144 50 GB Blu-ray. That would be tens of thousands of standard DVDs, hundreds of thousands of CDs and probably billions of photos.

There are concerns about loss of 37.5 terabytes of data to a hard drive crash, but if 37.5 is really the standard TB in 2010, the purchase of a replacement back to 37.5 TB all for being so expensive . Best defragmentation tools dramatically speed up, or a defrag might take days – unless, as mentioned, is using a file system as NTFS does not need defragmentation.

You do not hear much these days about holographic storage or will be in 2010, nor do we know how much storage capacity flash offered in 2010. However, an iPod nano sporting 1 TB of storage in the flash memory can be a reality before 2010, too.

Storage. It really is the answer for the space we need for our digital lives. Space is the final frontier, after all, although I’m sure Captain Kirk would laugh at the idea of flying the spacecraft impossible immense business through the 300 terabits of content in an area of 3.5-inch hard drive source.

Stainless Steel Towel Rails: For High Standard And High Quality

The right kind of accessories, like stainless steel towel rails can give a high quality look to your bathroom and warm up your towel too. To keep your bathrooms warm and well organized with much space for hanging towels, you must install steel towel rails in the bathroom. The bathroom is the only place, where you can be all alone so make sure that it is cozy and comfortable in all aspects. You try to add some additional fixtures to your bathroom to give it a classy look. In winter, early morning after a warm bath when you have a warm towel, it gives you much comfort. It will give a stylish and gracious look to your bathroom. You may have a lot of choices according to your bathroom, like white chrome and gold.

Stainless steel towel rails are made of 201 or 304 stainless steel. You can choose your preferred towel rails from contemporary stainless steel towel rails, from straight and curved stainless steel towel rails to designer stainless steel towel rails. These towel rails are vey easy to install and come with a wall mounting kit. All towel rails are constructed from 100% stainless steel with brackets. These are very easy to clean by using any of the steel cleaning products or can be polished with a soft small cloth. Scratches and marks can be removed by using metal polish. This gives an improved heat output and a longer lifespan. However, this makes the rails harder to manufacture, meaning more time has to be spent on producing these rails.

As this makes it a little bit expensive, extra time is spent on its manufacturing, combined with the look and smooth feel of rails make them well worth the extra cost. But just thinking of the cost, do not compare it with others, because the others will be less costly but no doubt will be inferior.

These rails are available in different designs and styles; you can also search for more online. But for high standard and high quality, one must think of the stainless steel towel rails. You will never regret your decision although it is a little expensive.

Buy towel rails according to the area of your bathroom. You may ask for the help of the store attendant to guide you about which rails will be suitable for your bathroom. It should not be too big or too small according to the place. While buying make sure that stainless steel towel rails are rust proof and it’s a perfect choice for your bathroom to give it a classic appeal and stylish look.

How To Use Social Media Marketing To Increase Sales

There are literally hundreds of niche topic social media networks in existence today and with the advent of open source programs such as Ning, Kick-Apps, and Groups, there are literally hundreds more popping up every day.  However, few networks have managed to reach the pinnacle of social fabric integration in the same way Facebook, Twitter and You-Tube have.  This article focuses on defining the critical business case for developing, launching and operating a Social Media Marketing strategy as a tactic to reach new customers and increase sales.  The Social Media Moguls website is dedicate to sharing insights for small business owners using Social Media to increase sales.

Contemporary business organizations recognize the proliferation of online social media, but only the most progressive and forward thinking organizations, have taken action by developing comprehensive, fully integrated and carefully though-out strategic plans to capitalize on this trend to gain market leadership and increase brand awareness exponentially.  Your business should be one of those organizations. This article has been specifically written to provide you an overview so that you can define a strategy for utilizing these emerging communication tools to create real value for your business.

Launching and maintaining a social media presence on multiple networks can often seem like a daunting task.  However, more and more of the top networks are developing strategic alliances that facilitate cross updating of information (e.g. Facebook Status Updates, can now be set to automatically update your twitter profile). Now that, brings to mind to the proverbial “killing two birds with one stone” philosophy.  (“No pun intended, Twitter… lol J)  Once the national plan is implemented, Spirit can amend its national plan to provide guidance, direction and resources to member hospitals interested in tapping into the social media space. I learned tricks like that from a phenomenal video training series developed by my friend David Hindie. I usually recommend it to all my readers.

MOST ACTIVE SOCIAL NETWORKS

FACEBOOK – As the largest and most successful social networking media site in operation today, Facebook has 300 Million users worldwide  and continues to grow and add new members at an impressive rate. Members interact with one another by providing updates to their personalized pages which may include photos, videos, links to other sites, or “microblog” type status updates that let’s friends and colleagues know what you are up to.

TWITTER – Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read messages known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the author’s profile page and delivered to the author’s subscribers who are known as followers. Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends or, by default, allow open access.

YOU-TUBE – YouTube is a video sharing website on which users can upload and share videos. Most of the content on YouTube has been uploaded by individuals, although media corporations including CBS, the BBC, UMG and other organizations offer some of their material via the site, as part of the YouTube partnership program. Alexa ranks You-Tube as the fourth most visited site on the web.

There are literally thousands of pages worth of great information and insight into each of these networks.  My recommendation is that you do some initial research and spend some time getting familiar with each network and what its intended purpose is.  There is loads of great free information available. In addition there are a number of competitively priced and useful video, ebooks and software programs recommended on the Social Media Moguls page.

Sandisk Offers Encrypted Usb Drive

Utilizing an encrypted USB drive has become a concern of many organizations that use confidential information on a daily basis. SanDisk Enterprise products are becoming the standard choice for many of these organizations. An encrypted USB drive offers the highest level of security possible when responsibly using sensitive information. The liability for an organization that is responsible for the exposure of confidential information is great and so an encrypted USB drive is the sensible choice. Drives programmed with encryption technology are providing highest levels of security for confidential data.

Features of an Encrypted USB Drive

An encrypted USB drive provides the strongest security measures available. If the flash drive is lost the drive is terminated.  If the drive is stolen and access is attempted the drive is locked down after a number of failed passwords attempts. The fact that an encrypted USB drive is independent of their operating systems the drive cannot be used as a host to upload a virus. Encrypted keys for drives are hardware based and are never stored in the operating system, reducing the possibility of a successful hacker obtaining passwords to gain access. An encrypted USB drive with data encryption is proving to be the most secure method for protecting data.

SanDisk Enterprise produces an encrypted USB drive that is functional and features an ultra-fast transfer rate of 20MB for writing and 24MB for reading. Mandatory access and control of all transferred files is implemented by partitioning files for added security. Through a central management and control software program an encrypted USB drive can be monitored, data can be backed up or the drive instantly terminated from a central server should the unit is lost or stolen. Corporate, government and military organizations prefer an encrypted USB drive for
their personnel because they provide a format that is both secure and functional.

Encrypted USB Drive Enhances Security

An encrypted USB drive with a strong authentication process and encryption keys provides the very best security available for protecting data. SanDisk Enterprise’s secure USB Cruzer model features the 256-bit AES algorithm. This algorithm is the best encryption available today for either hardware or software encrypted applications. If your company is using flash drives without encryption it is time to employ an encrypted USB drive for use by your personnel. Simply put an encrypted USB drive can help to keep your data safe and at the same time provide a level of functionality for your personnel who depend on smooth access to data.

An encrypted USB drive will not only prevent unauthorized users from gaining access to the data stored on the drive but it will prevent access to your operating system also. If an attack is made on your operating system and the drive is used to play host to a virus, anti-virus software will avert the attack to your system. An encrypted USB drive partitions files in the drive making them more secure against compromise as well. Even if a hacker or thief were able to gain access to the drive files couldn’t be copied to another hard drive. The encryption used by an encrypted USB drive has proven to be the best safeguard against attacks to both your data and operating system.
