Spending in the black community

Like many, you may desire to spend all of your money in the black community.  Let’s face facts.  It would be nearly impossible to achieve this goal.  Consider that manufacturing and supply chains are rarely operated by African Americans.  Consider that much of the merchandise available in America comes from outside the country.  In these modern times you would be hard pressed to even spend all of your money in the larger white community.  The best option available for spending money in the African American community is to spend with online black owned businesses.  In case you have not noticed, retail sales are quickly migrating online.  Speaking as a native born African American, I would much rather (and I do) buy products directly from an average white citizen’s website than at the big chain sites.  At least that way I know the money is passing through the hands of another citizen first.  Beyond that, I really desire to spend money with other African Americans.

There is a quiet (not hidden) movement taking place.  If you have not heard of the Empowerment Experiment you need to check it out.  I will not give any details.  Also, there are a number of Black owned websites that encourage, allow and make it possible to spend with African Americans from coast to coast. A favorite site is Blackbuying.com.  This website was built to aid African Americans in spending and earning inside our community.  It’s an up and coming site that boasts a number of common products.  It could just as easily be named Americanbuying.com.  The distinction is that it is black owned.

Try typing “black businesses” into a search engine.  You may be disappointed with the search results.  Then again you may not be disappointed.  One of the most difficult achievements for website operators is to draw traffic to their sites.  Try typing “black businesses” into a search engine.  If you operate or want to operate an online business in the black community, you may find that there is plenty of room at the top of the listings for your business. Large numbers and easy to read. The automatic time keeper works well so therefore is always on perfect time. The temperature readout (which is why I purchased it) works well and seems to be very accurate. I have owned a La Crosse weather station for about 4 years now and it works great so therefore I thought another smaller indoor unit for the baby’s room would be a good idea. The first one Amazon shipped to me didn’t work so I went online, filled out the quick form and within four days there was another one at my door. The second one worked fine. The first one was shipped out for free. I’ve never had to return an item to Amazon and I must say it was very easy and fast.

- Receiver is more delicate ( getting atomic clock signal immediately and in the day, when my old one was only correcting at night ( Atomic clock RF signals travel better at night ) about 10′ from the nearest window ). BTW, if you want to get the right clock straight away and in the day, go near a window with clear view to the outside and press clock sync button on the back for manual sync.
- simple to follow instruction, and the web address for the instruction is revealed right next to the battery compartment ( handy, since we want to refer to instruction when we change the batteries )
- easy timezone setting ( one button to toggle 4 USA time areas ) — more on this on Neutral ( below ) also.
- light Savings Time reflects the right calendar period — some of the older products somehow does not understand the new daylight savings period of time in USA, but this one does.
- If you care about accuracy of the temperature display, mine was correct inside 0.5 oF, compared to my lab instrument — your clock’s accuracy may vary :- ).

- Instruction is not clear for the first initialization. Could only decide on the timezone AFTER the clock searched for the Atomic clock signal… ( a few minutes ), but the instruction does not say that. I presumed I had a faulty unit at first. Better instruction needed.

- make sure that you plan to use this clock in continental USA ( ONLY the four time zones, Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific ). But then again, I do not believe you could receive the atomic clock signal if you’re outside of these areas in North America.

- Fold up the instruction pamphlet and tape it close to the battery compartment on the back — you will be glad you did in about 18+ months.
- I regard myself as a massive fan of Atomic clocks — one in almost every room in my home — and found that the majority of the external temp sensor version wishes battery changes each six month or so, while the non-external temp version, like this one, wishes battery change every 1224 months ( all using alkaline batteries ). So I use rechargeable for the clocks with external temp sensor ( both the clock and the sensor ) now, and alkaline batteries otherwise. I am a big fan of these large, digital wall clocks and will be buying these for older relatives who can’t see as well as they used too!!!

What to do if your 2.5″ IDE (or ATA) Hard Disk won’t connect to a standard IDE Disk Caddy

If you’ve taken the Hard Disk Drive (HDD) out of your laptop and you’re looking to recover some data from it or to reformat it and use it in a USB Disk Caddy as a back up unit but it won’t fit what options do you have?

There are normally two reasons why a standard IDE/ATA Hard Disk will not fit or connect to a standard USB Disk Enclosure designed to take these hard drives:

1. The Hard Disk is a 12mm thick version and not the regular 9.5mm thick size. Some older Hard Disks were manufactured just a little bit “fatter” than the normal standard and because of this the HDD’s will not fit inside the HDD Disk Case. Because you can’t have the HDD rattling around inside the case they are specifically machined to only work with 9.5mm HDD’s. If you have got one of the older/thicker 12mm versions then your only option is to use a Cable Kit like out VE225 product..

   These are fine and will recover the data from the HDD and they do allow you to use the HDD to store data etc. but because they don’t provide a protective and neat case around the HDD they are not ideal for on-going usage

2. The Hard Disk Drive has been fitted with a “sheath” by the laptop manufacturer. This sheath fits over the standard IDE/ATA Pin Interface and needs to be removed before the HDD can be used with any USB Disk Enclosure. Removal is normally pretty straightforward and done in a matter of seconds.

   As far as we are aware the “sheaths” put over the end of the HDD by some laptop manufactures were used simply to make the assembly of the laptops a little easier. Once removed the usual IDE interface is visible and you’ll then be able to use the Hard Disk in any standard 2.5″ Laptop Hard Drive Case

External DVD Writers: Welcome To The Storage Revolution

We all remember the humble floppy disk and how it ground away in our computers, trying to save little bits of information without becoming corrupted or damaged. Then came our savior, the CD-ROM, which managed to store a lot more information without the problems of corruption or damage. Of course, for a long time the CDs were read-only, so we could use programs or documents which were already saved to CD-ROMs but we couldn’t save our own information to them, so if we wanted to transfer our own files from one computer to another, unconnected computer, we had to rely on the floppy disk anyway. Then the CD-Rs and CD-RWs came onto the market, allowing us to save a lot of information onto disks, either once or, in the case of a CD-RW, time and time again.

Now another revolution has come about with DVD writers, which allow us to save even more information onto a disk than the CD-R and CD-RW allowed us to save. However these drives are only standard or options in some of the very newest computers, and many of us have perfectly good computers without these writers. For those of us who want to upgrade without going through the hassle of getting new CPU cases, external writers offer a great solution to our problems.

With an external writer we can use our own computers to make our own movies or photo discs which we can then play on home entertainment systems. Writers are also great for storage and file backup, since these new discs can hold a ridiculous amount of information, especially if you’re saving digital photographs or text documents. Though they are still good for transporting data from one computer to another, remember that not all computers are equipped with the correct drives. Often times this can raise compatibility problems, though with external drives it’s an easy fix: you can just attach the external drive to the computer you want to transfer files to and move the files that way.

Most external DVD writers attach to computers through either a USB 1.0, USB 2.0, or Firewire port; be sure to check compatibility with your computer and its connections before purchasing one. Also, remember that external drives are also great for laptop computers since they allow you to make copies while at your home or office and then leave the drive behind when you’re travelling with your laptop
